62% of the energy in a combustion engine is used in the combustion process in the engine.
(Turning the pistons to allow air and fuel in, and exhaust out of the engine)

About 17% of the energy is used when idling.
roughly 5% is used in the transmission.
Around 2% of the energy runs accessories like the AC
The other 14% is used to propel your car down the road.
