How did the Canterbury quake affect there Environment?
Although there was no loss of life in the September 2010 Canterbury earthquake in New Zealand, there was considerable and widespread destruction to the homes ,businesses and Unique old buildings in and around Christchurch. There has been more than 1000 aftershocks since then.
Sewerage systems, water ,gas and electricity supplies were severely affected.
A phenomena known as liquefaction, the upsurge of silt from beneath the surface of the soil, caused widespread problems, taking weeks of cleanup and removal.
Streams and rivers have been polluted with sewerage and industrial waste.
There are huge rifts in country properties and cracks in the ground.
Some rivers have altered course.
